Savute is home to almost all of the Chobe species, making for some fantastic game viewing, especially of the predators such as lion, cheetah and hyena. One of the only species that cannot be found at Savute is the water loving antelope.
The Savute Marsh is a vast swampland which draws incredible numbers of migratory birds and animals, particularly large herds of zebra. The Savute Channel flows into the marsh, bringing water from the Linyanti River about 100 km away. Further south, the channel, together with the Ngwezumba River from northeast, bring water to the Mababe Depression. The Mababe is a vast and flat area fringed by thickets of trees. The area once formed part of the Makgadikgadi super-lake.
The Savute area is a fascinating and curious place. Over the past 100 years the Savute Channel has inexplicably dried up and recommenced its flow many times. Numerous dead trees line the channel as they germinate and flourish when the channel was dry, and yet drown when the water suddenly decides to flow again!
